Air transportation in Dubai is far more important than just having a connection to the rest of the world. As a global city Dubai has a lot to offer, from large multinational corporations to a tourist destination filled with luxury hotels and beaches. To describe Dubai as just being one or the other would be an injustice. Dubai combines the idea of what a global city is of a few different authors we read this semester. Sassen and Friedman see a global city as an economic financial center (which Dubai is), while Stefan Kratke views a global city as a cultural center as well. Dubai encompasses both these views. With its global connections offered by the rapid expansion of Emirates Airlines, Dubai continues to be able to connect other financial global cities such as Houston as well as less financial economic cities such as Los Angeles.

Location ends up playing an important role in Dubai’s success. Located in the middle of the world, Emirates is able to provide a nonstop flight to any destination, appealing to many business people. Its location in the sunny gulf on the other hand makes it a pleasant tourist destination for those fleeing harsh winter weather.

Dubai was build from practically nothing. Through tough work and luck Dubai has been able to flourish, becoming one of the key financial and cultural hubs in the region as well as the world.

Ten years ago nobody would have looked at Dubai and say that it would soon become an international stopping point offering one stop connections to just about anywhere in the world. With rapid growth in the aviation sector, Dubai has been able to saturate the market with availability across the world. Advances in aircraft have contributed to this success with the development of ultra-long haul aircraft that are able to fly for instance from Dubai to locations such as Houston and Los Angeles.

As the worlds fastest growing airports, Mohammad Alhi the CEO of Air Traffic Services credits this to Dubai’s ideal central location between the emerging economies of the east and the west.

As Dubai’s central location continues to attract passengers and cargo through its airport, the city itself begins to look more and more lucrative to tourists as well as businesses. The ease with which people can move to, through and from Dubai is catapulting the globalization process.

Ten years ago nobody knew Dubai existed, today a majority of the worlds population has to transit at least the airport to arrive at their final destination, providing for exposure that will allow Dubai to continue to grow.

Double digit growth continues for Dubai International Airport

Double digit growth continues for Dubai International Airport 18 million passengers register a 13% growth in 2003 - 3 March

Dubai International Airport continues with

a double digit growth for the year 2003. A total of

18.06 million passengers passed through the

airport, registering a growth of 13% over the 15.9

million in 2002. Cargo movement registered a

21.5% growth of with total freight movement of

939,966 tonnes in 2003 as compared to 784,996.93

tonnes in 2002.

Aircraft movement has also shown growth of

12.5% with 168,511 movements as compared to

149,844 movements in 2002. On December 2nd, the

air traffic control (ATC) registered its 200,000th

approach movement in 2003, setting a new record.

On December 10th, the ATC recorded the highest

daily movement of 602.

Dubai International Hotel continued its upward

growth with occupancy rate registering at 107%

for the year. Highest occupancy rate was during

December (122%) followed by September (119%).

Commenting on the annual statistics, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates, said: “The continuous growth at Dubai International Airport verifies the fact that Dubai is now the business and leisure destination of the region. Over the years the Department of Civil Aviation has continuously stressed on maintaining a very high standard for all the services and facilities provided and this has paid off. We have been voted the Best in the World thrice last year. Once by the travel industry (World Travel Awards) and twice by passengers (IATA survey and Conde Nast Traveller). We have continuously attracted new airlines and can truly be regarded as a hub with 105 airlines and 145 destinations.

“The Department of Civil Aviation has witnessed very notable growth in all areas of its operations. While passenger movement is up 13%, cargo has grown a phenomenal 21% growth and Dubai Duty Free has registered a record increase of 24% in sales. It is our aim to continue and further improve our efforts in the coming years. We expect the growth to continue in 2004.”

Mr Mohammad Ahli, Director Operations, DCA, commented: “Despite global events affecting aviation and travel industry worldwide Dubai International Airport has had consistent growth. In 2004, we expect over 20 million passengers. Bearing in mind the general growth of Dubai and specially Emirates airline, according to projections by 2010, the airport will witness passenger throughput of 40 million.”

Peak passenger movement was in January with

1.56 million registering the highest growth in a

single month of 26%; this followed the second

highest growth in February with 1.4 million

passengers and 20% growth. Average passenger

movement per day registered at 56,273, which

shows a 19% increase over 2002 figures. Arriving

passengers registered a 15% growth while

departing passengers registered a 15.5%% growth

in 2003. Transit passengers totalled 887,278,

which is a decline of 17.4% — Dubai is now more a

destination rather than a mere transit stop from a

decade ago.

As the world focuses on Dubai as a leisure and business destination, Dubai International Airport gained considerable recognition in 2003. It collected six awards – World Travel Awards for World’s Leading Airport and Best Airport Middle East; Business Traveller Germany Best Airport Middle East; Business Traveller Middle East Best Airport Middle East; IATA’s Global Airport Monitor 2002 revealed Dubai International Airport as the Best in Overall Passenger Satisfaction; Conde Nast Traveller Award for Best International Airport Worldwide; and Routes Marketing Awards for Best Airport Marketing. All of these awards were bestowed on the basis of votes cast by customers.

Linking Global Cities: Emirates Airlines Expansion

THE inaugural flight of Emirates’ new nonstop service between Dubai and Houston touched down here Monday, directly linking the two energy centers.

At the same time, word circulated that another Middle Eastern carrier, Qatar Airways, may be flying into Houston.

Natural gas-rich Qatar’s national airline will start flights to Houston by mid-2008, the airline’s chief executive officer, Akbar al-Baker, was quoted as saying in a story in the Gulf Times.

The Houston Airport System has been in talks with Qatar Airways, spokeswoman Marlene McClinton confirmed Monday. However, she couldn’t say that a deal actually had been reached.

The airport system also is in talks with a host of other foreign carriers regarding new service to Houston.

But the spotlight at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Monday was on Emirates. The airline’s big Boeing 777 pulled to the gate under spray from water cannons operated by the Houston Fire Department.

Emirates’ chairman and chief executive, Sheikh Ahmed Bid Saeed Al-Maktoum, was on hand to mark the new route as Flight 211 touched down shortly after 3 p.m.

The sheik said there is a growing demand for convenient air connections between the U.S. and cities in the Middle East.

“We’ll have two more new points into the States” this year, he said, but declined to specify where.

The carrier has 246 new aircraft on order.

Rick Vacar, head of the Houston Airport System, called Emirates’ arrival in Houston “a big deal.”

Vacar said the Houston flight, which takes more than 17 hours, is the longest in the Emirates’ system.

Emirates will start with three flights a week and increase to seven flights in February.

Emirates is one of the many international carriers that have recently started service at Bush. Korean Airlines, EVA Air Cargo and AirBridge Cargo also have either begun operating or are on the verge of kicking off new flights to Bush.

Houston airport officials say new longer-haul aircraft, along with legislative changes, are helping the city attract more international carriers.
